Lucid expands Air Pure recall over risk of sudden power loss to 3,700+ vehicles

Lucid has issued a new recall affecting its Air Pure sedan after identifying a defect that could lead to a sudden loss of drive power while driving.

According to documents filed with Transport Canada and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall affects 82 units of the 2024 to 2026 Lucid Air Pure Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) in Canada and another 3,627 in the U.S. due to improperly secured bolts within the half-shaft assembly, which could allow the component to disconnect from the drive unit.

If that happens, the vehicle could lose propulsion without warning, something that obviously significantly increases the risk of a crash.

Unlike dual-motor variants of the Lucid Air, which can continue operating on a secondary drive unit, the single-motor RWD configuration leaves no redundancy. That means a failure in this system could result in a complete and immediate loss of motive power.

The affected vehicles were built between September 2023 and July 2025, with Lucid identifying a “clean point” in late July 2025 where manufacturing changes were implemented to address the issue. The problem has been traced back to inconsistencies during assembly, including interruptions in torque application during the adhesive curing process, as well as the potential use of compromised or contaminated bolts.

Lucid’s internal investigation found at least 26 confirmed incidents tied to this defect between October 2025 and February 2026, all linked to the same root cause. Notably, no failures were reported in vehicles that had exceeded 25,000 miles, nor in units produced after the manufacturing fix was introduced.

To resolve the issue, Lucid will replace the half-shaft bolts free of charge.

This latest recall also expands on a previous recall in October last year that attempted to identify at-risk vehicles using a telematics-based detection algorithm. However, additional cases outside that original scope prompted a broader review and the current recall expansion.

Lucid is also developing a revised software-based monitoring system that could detect early signs of half-shaft issues and alert drivers proactively through an over-the-air (OTA) update.

The recall adds to a growing list of quality-related challenges for the automaker. Earlier this month, Lucid also issued a recall impacting nearly all early production units of its new Gravity SUV. Roughly 4,500 vehicles were pulled due to improperly welded second-row seat belts.
