Emirates has equipped its first Airbus A380 with next-generation Starlink internet, marking an industry-first for the world’s largest passenger aircraft and paving the way for a major upgrade to onboard Wi-Fi across its fleet.
First A380 with Starlink Installed
The newly retrofitted A380 returned to Dubai this week. Engineers completed the installation and certification work in the United Kingdom.
The aircraft now delivers much faster internet speeds than older systems, with speeds jumping from Mbps to Gbps. Earlier A380 Wi-Fi systems offered less than 1 Mbps for the entire aircraft.
Starlink changes that completely. The system now delivers more than 2 Gbps of total bandwidth. That increase allows passengers to stream, game, video call, and work at the same time.
Unique Three-Antenna Setup
Emirates installed three Starlink antennas on each A380. This setup is another industry-first, needed to support the aircraft’s double-deck design and large passenger capacity.
Engineers also added more wireless access points across both decks, optimizing the network to keep speeds consistent throughout the cabin.
Free Wi-Fi for All Passengers
Emirates will offer the service free to all passengers, no matter the cabin. That removes a common barrier seen on other airlines.
The airline also plans to expand features in the future. Live TV streaming will launch first on personal devices, later coming to seatback screens.
Fleetwide Rollout Already Underway
The A380 upgrade builds on a wider deal between Emirates and SpaceX announced in late 2025. The airline plans to equip 232 aircraft with Starlink by mid-2027.
Work has already started. Emirates has completed installations on 25 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. Emirates says that so far, more than 650,000 passengers have used the service.
The airline plans to speed up installations in 2026, with its Dubai engineering facilities will handling much of the work.
