Canada to add 1,600 EV chargers with new $10.6M investment

The Government of Canada has announced new funding to expand electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across the country as part of its broader auto strategy.

In a news release on Wednesday, Natural Resources Canada confirmed it will invest $10.6 million across 14 projects that will collectively add more than 1,600 new EV chargers across the country. The announcement was made in Toronto during the EV & Charging Expo.

No specific locations were announced, nor whether they will be Level 2 or DC fast chargers, but based on the funding amount, the vast majority of the 1,600 units are likely to be Level 2 chargers, with likely only a small number of DC fast chargers included across the 14 projects.

The funding is part of a broader effort to remove one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption—charging availability—while supporting Canada’s long-term ambitions to become a leader in electrification, battery supply chains, and advanced vehicle technologies.

“Canada’s new Auto Strategy laid out our plan for a connected, electric, clean future that creates jobs and makes it easy and affordable for Canadians to get around. Today’s announcement shows how we are getting more EV chargers built every month so that Canadians can choose EVs with confidence,” said Tim Hodgson.

In addition to infrastructure investments, the federal government is also continuing efforts to educate consumers and encourage adoption. It was also announced that Plug’n Drive will receive an additional $1.1 million to extend its cross-country EV test drive tour. The initiative focuses on smaller and mid-sized communities where EV adoption has lagged behind larger urban markets, giving Canadians hands-on experience with EVs and access to experts who can answer your questions.

The latest funding builds on more than $1.2 billion the federal government has invested since 2016 to support EV charging and hydrogen re-fueling infrastructure through initiatives like the Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP).
