General Motors (GM) is recalling nearly 30,000 Cadillac Optiq electric SUVs in the U.S. over a software issue that could prevent the front windows from detecting an obstruction when being closed remotely.
According to a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall covers 29,347 Optiqs from the 2025, 2026 and 2027 model years. Affected vehicles were built between July 24, 2024 and September 22, 2026.
Transport Canada has not yet issued a similar recall.
The issue is limited to a specific situation involving the key fob’s express-up function. When the front windows are remotely closed, they may fail to stop and reverse if an obstruction is encountered during the final 13 mm (0.5 inches) of travel.
That creates the possibility of a passenger being pinched by the closing glass.
“When the express-up feature on the front power windows is activated using the key fob, the windows may fail to stop and reverse automatically if they encounter an object during the final 13 mm of upward travel,” GM said in its filing.
According to GM, the issue was traced to a software calibration from supplier Kwangjin America. The upper travel range for the anti-pinch system had been set too low, preventing the system from consistently meeting the required stop-and-reverse performance.
The problem was first brought to GM’s attention in June after a dealer noticed the windows on four 2026 Optiqs were not reversing properly. GM later tested five vehicles, with four failing to consistently stop and reverse under certain conditions.
GM corrected the calibration in production on September 22.
Fortunately for owners, the recall won’t require any new hardware. GM will update the body control module (BCM) software free of charge. Some Optiqs can receive the fix through an over-the-air (OTA) update, while other owners can have the software installed at a dealership.
