2024 BMW i5 EV lineup unveiled

BMW has finally unveiled an all-electric version of its popular 5-Series. The German automaker is offering two separate variants for the electric sedan.

The i5 eDrive40 is the base model 5 with a rear-drive set-up powered by an 84.3 kWh battery. Although we have not seen the full specs, BMW is expecting the i5 eDrive40 to deliver a range of around 300 miles (483km). Pricing starts at $67,795 in the United States. The eDrive40 also comes with an optional M Sport package that is primarily aesthetic in nature.

While the more powerful BMW i5 M60 xDrive delivers a dual-motor set-up with the same battery as the eDrive40. The i5 M60 comes in with an estimated 256-mile (412km) range which is pretty low for a vehicle starting at $85,095. However, with its 400-volt architecture, the i5 M60 xDrive can charge up to 205 KW when plugged into a DC fast charger, or 11kW on a Level 2 charger.

You won’t be able to get your hands on the new 5-series for a few more months. However, the specs, options and driving features make the 5-series EVs an interesting option. The biggest question for us Canadians is, what will the cost be, and when can we get our hands on an i5 M60 or eDrive40 series up north?
