Watch a Tesla Model Y narrowly avoid being rear-ended by a semi at high speed

The Tesla Model Y was recently awarded a perfect 5-star safety rating from the NHTSA. Luckily for this owner, he didn’t have to put those results to the test as he narrowly avoided a massive accident.

In the video we see traffic slowing down on a divided 2-lane stretch of highway in what appears to be Idaho. The congestion looks to be as a result of construction that has one of the lanes closed ahead.

As the Model Y driver approaches a Dodge pickup truck, he suddenly veers off to the shoulder on the right. He must have been looking in his rear-view mirror as milliseconds later a semi truck slams into the back of the truck at high speed, causing massive damage but hopefully no major injuries to the occupants.

The video shows us the viewpoint from the rear, side, and front cameras, and in each one it is remarkable just how close the semi truck came to obliterating the Model Y.

The video title appears to suggest the Model Y had Autopilot engaged at the time of the incident, and that was the reason the car veered out of the way. Obviously there is no way for us to confirm that, but it appears unlikely it would have reacted like this on its own.
