Tesla Model Y L launches in the U.S., but Canada left waiting

Tesla has officially expanded its Model Y lineup in the United States with the launch of the long-awaited six-seat Model Y L.

However, Canadian customers will have to sit this one out — at least for now. Tesla’s configurator currently only lists the vehicle for the U.S. market, with no indication of a Canadian launch timeline. Deliveries in the U.S. are scheduled to begin in September or October.

Launch Series packs in premium extras

The new variant arrives as a Limited Edition Premium AWD “Launch Series,” carrying a starting price of US$61,990, a US$4,000 premium over the Performance trim.

As Tesla has done with previous launch editions, early buyers receive a long list of included options and perks at no additional charge.

The package includes one year of Full Self-Driving (Supervised), one year of free Supercharging, and one year of Premium Connectivity. Customers can also choose any available paint colour, interior option, including the new Zen Grey, and wheel design without increasing the purchase price.

Speaking of wheels, Tesla also introduced a new wheel design with the Model Y L – 20″ Uberhelix.

Tesla has also added several exclusive touches for Launch Series owners, including unique badging, custom floor mats, puddle lights, suede dashboard trim, and special door sill plates.

As with the Model Y Launch Series, expect this trim to disappear in a few months, with the SUV then being offered in the standard Premium trim, without those extra touches, and for several thousand dollars less.

A bigger Model Y aimed at families

The Model Y L stretches the existing Model Y formula by adding approximately seven inches of length, growing to 196 inches overall while maintaining a relatively modest 4,600-pound curb weight.

Inside, the extra space allows Tesla to move to a dedicated six-seat, three-row configuration with a 2-2-2 layout. The second row receives heated and ventilated captain’s chairs with powered folding and lifting armrests, while third-row passengers get heated seats, dedicated air vents, cupholders, and their own lighting.

Both rear rows fold completely flat, allowing the Model Y L to offer up to 89 cubic feet of cargo space.

Front occupants receive powered thigh extenders, heated and ventilated seats, and adjustable headrests, while the cabin also gains an 8-inch rear touchscreen to complement the 16-inch center display.

Performance remains solid despite the added size

Power comes from an 88 kWh battery pack paired with dual motors and all-wheel drive, delivering an EPA-rated range of up to 325 miles (523 km) on the standard 19-inch wheels. Opting for the 20-inch wheels drops that figure slightly to 320 miles (514 km).

Despite being significantly larger than the standard Model Y, Tesla says the Model Y L can still accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. The Model Y L also comes with the standard peak Supercharging rate of 250 kW.

Additional upgrades include Tesla’s second-generation suspension with continuous variable damping, 18 speakers, a front bumper camera with washer, RGB ambient lighting, and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability with the required adapter included.

Why Canada was left out

The absence of a Canadian launch is notable but perhaps not surprising. Tesla is no longer exporting U.S.-built vehicles to Canada due to ongoing tariff issues, meaning production from Giga Texas is effectively limited to the American market.

As we have previously reported, Tesla could potentially supply Canadian customers with Shanghai-built Model Y L units, similar to how it handled the Canadian Model 3 lineup, but that has yet to materialize.

For now, Canadians wanting Tesla’s new six-seat SUV will have to wait and see when the company decides to expand availability beyond the United States.
