Tesla made some changes to the Design Studio in China last November, updating the specs of the Model Y Standard Range and renaming the entry-level variant to the Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD).
The most notable change was to the 0-60mph acceleration, which slowed by more than one second to 6.9 seconds.
Long delivery wait times in China have meant some customers who ordered the SR variant prior to the change were still waiting to receive their new cars.
Unfortunately, they are now being told they will have to accept the slower Model Y RWD as Giga Shanghai stopped production of the SR variant on January 24, 2022.
As a goodwill gesture, Tesla is offering those customers their original price. On January 1, 2022 Tesla increased the Model Y RWD by ¥21,088 to ¥301,840 ($60,100 CAD/$47,700 USD).
Despite the slower acceleration, there are some extra goodies now included in the Model Y in China that should help soften the blow:
If that is not enough, the customer can also choose to cancel their order and their deposit will be refunded.
Tesla Gigafactory Shanghai 5.6s acceleration version of the Tesla Model Y SR has been discontinued.
The original fixed car users can pay the original price to upgrade to AMD chip but acceleration is 6.9s for the RWD version or choose to refund. Which one would you choose? $TSLA pic.twitter.com/qvyNB26zIP
