Tesla set to enter Australia’s retail electricity sector

Tesla has announced its impending entry into the Australian electricity market. As Renew Economy reports, the American company will disrupt the status quo of the electricity retailing business in the Down Under by combining the sales of rooftop solar, batteries, and its main product; electric vehicles.

Tesla’s entry became official after its application was accepted by the Australian Energy Regular.

Meanwhile, Tesla already does energy business in Australia. It has supplied batteries for multiple energy storage projects, including the Hornsdale Power Reserve and Victoria Big Battery. It also sells Powerwall batteries to households. Tesla also operates Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) in partnership with Energy Locals.

Tesla is now combining these products and its EVs in Australia in its latest venture as an energy retailer. It will provide retail electricity packages to consumers through the grid. The company is applying for an operating license for Tesla Energy Ventures in NSW, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, and the ACT.

The first customers to be welcome on board would be Tesla EV or Powerwall owners. Commercial customers owning Megapacks could also enroll. The company has a pool of about 150,000 customers to start with.

According to Tesla, it will control the appliances as they supply electricity to the grid. They will help manage the energy demand of its growing Supercharger network in the country.
