An email from Elon Musk to Tesla employees on Wednesday has been leaked online, showing that the CEO wants the best possible build quality on the Cybertruck when it launches.
Tesla has been plagued with production quality issues when a new vehicle has been released. When the Model 3 was launched in 2017 it suffered from panels gaps and paint issues, among other things. While quality has increased over the years, some of these issues can still be found on Model 3 cars being built at the Fremont factory. Those problems continued with the launch of the Model Y in 2021, with the electric SUV suffering from many of the same problems as its smaller sibling.
Now with the Cybertruck launch just around the corner, Musk doesn’t want the Cybertruck to experience the same fate. The email was first leaked this morning on Xiaohongshu, a Chinese social media network. Drive Tesla did not report on it immediately as we were unsure of its authenticity, but we have since been able to verify with an independant source it is real.
In the email Musk explains that quality issues will be exacerbated by the Cybertruck’s “bright metal with mostly straight edges.” To make sure the Cybertruck build quality meets his standards, Musk goes on to explain that “all part dimensions need to be to the third decimal place in millimeters and tolerance need be specified in single digit microns.” Musk then likens the issue to LEGO and soda cans.
Musk ends the email with “Precision predicates perfectionism.”
The email appears to have been sent just before Musk took a production candidate Cybertruck for a drive at Giga Texas earlier today. When asked on X when we might get to learn more about specs and final pricing, Musk replied that information will be released when they are ready to do so.
Musk has previously said that information will be announced when the first deliveries take place, which looks like could take place next month.
