Tesla has recalled nearly 16,000 Model S and Model X vehicles in the US, and unlike most of their recalls that can be fixed through a free over-the-air (OTA) software update, this one will require a service visit. Transport Canada has not yet published the same recall, so we don’t know how many vehicles in Canada are impacted, but we expect that to happen soon.
According to the recall notice posted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website, the first-row seatbelts may not have been properly connected to its pretensioner anchor. The issues affects 2021-2023 Model S and Model X vehicles, a population which totals 15,869 vehicles, but only 1% of those are expected to actually have the issue.
Tesla says they have identified 12 warranty claims related to the issue, but is not aware of any crashes, injuries or deaths related to it.
If your Tesla is impacted, the fix will be relatively easy. Your car will be inspected and if necessary, both of your first-row seat belt will be reconnected to the pretensioner anchors. If the seat belts can’t be connected, the seat belt assembly will be replaced. All of this will of course be done at no cost.
