BMW cancels plans for North American release of its long-range iX3 EV

What was touted as being BMW’s first long-range electric vehicle (EV) won’t be coming to North America for its planned 2021 release.

First announced in 2018, the iX3 is an electric version of the X3 crossover, a popular vehicle in the US selling over 70,000 units in 2019, up 14% from the previous year.

The iX3 will be powered by a 74kWh battery pack with a WLTP estimated range of 439km (273 miles) on a full charge. It should be noted the WLTP estimations are typically very generous when compared to the more conservative and accurate EPA ratings, so it wouldn’t be surprising if the actual range was closer to 300-350km in North America.

The electric crossover is scheduled to begin production later this year, and will eventually be released in the first half of 2021 in Europe and China.

Tesla appears to be the only automaker who can gain any kind of traction with buyers in North America. Volkswagen has no plans to release their popular ID.3 EV this side of the pond (if they can get the software problems fixed). Mercedes Benz has also delayed the North American release of the EQC.
