Customers hoping to get behind the wheel of an electric vehicle (EV) from the Volkswagen Group are going to have to get in line and wait.
According to VW CEO Herbert Diess, the German automaker is “basically sold out of electric vehicles in Europe and in the United States” for 2022, and any new orders being placed today won’t be delivered until 2023. (via Financial Times)
Demand is so high that their order backlog in western Europe alone is 300,000, according to Diess.
This includes not only VW itself, but their other brands like Audi, Porsche, and Škoda, which sold a combined 99,000 EVs around the world in the first quarter of 2022.
In what is becoming a familiar story, Diess blames high demand coupled with supply chain shortages as the main reasons for the long delivery wait times.
VW is hoping to deliver 700,000 EVs this year, including 140,000 in China. The recent COVID lockdowns in China have put the automaker behind the eight ball to reach that target after having also missed their delivery target last year.
