UK Government requires new construction to have EV charge points

The United Kingdom (UK) is going to see a big boost in the number of electric vehicle (EV) charge points over the coming years.

Under new legislation announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, new construction will be required to include EV charge points starting next year.

The government expects up to 145,000 EV charge points will be installed across England each year as a result.

The initiative covers new homes and non-residential buildings, as well as properties under renovation with more than 10 parking spaces.

“New homes and buildings such as supermarkets and workplaces, as well as those undergoing major renovation, will be required to install electric vehicle charge points from next year,” the Prime Minster’s office said in a statement.

Along with the new rules, the government also announced that all new public fast charging stations must have contactless methods of payment, or other simpler ways to pay for charging sessions to make it easier for consumers to go electric.

The requirement for charge points in new construction will help the government reach their goal to phase out gas and diesel-powered cars by 2030.
