Kia EV6 claims new world record for least amount of time spent charging on cross country drive

Kia has announced their new EV6 has set a new Guinness World Record for least amount of time spent charging on a road trip across the United States.

The record was set in a 2,880.5 mile drive from New York City to Los Angeles in which the EV6 was only plugged in for 7 hours, 10 minutes, and 1 second.

That beat the previous record set by a Tesla Model S P85D by more than five hours. The Tesla spent 12 hours, 48 minutes, and 19 second plugged in along the same route.

It should be noted that the record was set in 2015, well before the advent of Tesla’s V3 Superchargers that are capable of charging at speeds up to 250kW.

In fact, Kia’s new record isn’t the shortest amount of time plugged in on a cross country drive. Our friends over at The Kilowatts beat Kia’s time by nearly a full hour earlier this year when they spent 6 hours, 31 minutes charging during their EV Cannonball record in a new Model S.

Kia made the announcement at the LA Auto Show on Wednesday, ahead of the EV6 launch in North America early next year.

In an accompanying press release, Kia said the average charging stop for the EV6 was under 20 minutes. The short stops were thanks to the vehicle’s 800 volt architecture, which allows it to charge from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes.

EV6 pricing in Canada has not yet been announced. EV6 First Edition model pricing in the U.S. was released earlier this summer, starting at $58,500 USD (~$73,700 CAD).
