As the US aviation industry continues to explore ways to increase profits, American Airlines is considering a major revamp of its in-flight offerings to attract more customers to its narrow-body fleet.
According to CNBC, American is considering partnering with Amazon or Starlink to provide in-flight entertainment and Wi-Fi on its narrow-body fleet. Per the source, to make this happen, American may bring back seat-back screens, a decade after removing them from non-premium seats.
The partnership would see Amazon provide content for the new in-seat entertainment system. This would include access to Amazon Prime, music, and even the option to shop with American miles while on the go. Presumably, if this partnership moves ahead, it will mean the end of the current American partnership with Apple. This partnership allows American guests to watch Apple TV+ content and stream in-flight music.
American has one of the largest narrow-body fleets in the country, and an overhaul of the in-flight entertainment system and the addition of Starlink systems would take years. Per the latest numbers, American has over 790 narrow-body jets and another 280 on order. Which means doing this kind of overhaul is not a simple process. If the change were to occur, it would most likely coincide with aircraft undergoing major maintenance and be introduced on new aircraft as they are launched.
Neither SpaceX nor Amazon has publicly commented on the reports.
