The combined power of Hyundai and Kia surpassed 200,000 total EV sales in Europe. Hyundai sold 131,719 units, while their sister brand Kia sold 96,200 units.
The Hyundai Motor Group has been in the region since 2014 with their EVs, but the pick-up was slow. In 2017, the company surpassed 10,000 units sold. However, momentum started to roll last year, with the Group passing 100,000 sales. Hyundai and Kia have sold a combined 43,865 units this year, which accounts for a 99.5% rise from 2020.
The release of the best-selling Hyundai Kona EV and the Kia Niro EV has boosted the continent’s sales. It is expected that both automakers will finish 2021 strong with the releases of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6 in 2021.
The South Korean automaker made Europe a focus for their business as the continent accounts for 40% of global EV sales. In addition, this focus also led to Hyundai purchasing a 20% stake in IONITY GmbH, which runs the continent’s largest EV charging station network.
