Tesla delaying deliveries of Standard Range Model Y in Canada into February, hinting at possible federal rebate eligibility

Ever since the Standard Range Model Y was announced for Canada earlier this month, there have been questions whether it would qualify for the federal iZEV rebate.

Based on the rules of the program, Tesla would have to work a little magic to make it qualify by introducing a software locked version at a lower price. Given their interesting decision to price the vehicle $100 below the upper limit of the threshold, we detailed last week the reasons why we think it would soon be $5,000 cheaper.

Strengthening the case, Drive Tesla has since heard from multiple owners across Canada their deliveries have been delayed. In cases where those customers have received a new date, it has all been on the same day – February 8, 2021.

According to information shared with us by a Tesla employee, the direction to delay deliveries came from the automaker’s legal team in Canada. It also came without explanation.

Now if it was just one location delaying deliveries, we might not suspect something was amiss. But when deliveries across Canada are delayed, seemingly all to the exact same date, one can only assume they are doing it for a good reason.

If all of that wasn’t enough, the Model Y’s are still arriving in Canada and Tesla is running out space to store them all, as seen in this video of a secondary storage area in Vancouver.

If you have a delivery date before February 8, 2021, or know anything more about the delay, please leave us a comment or email tips@driveteslacanada.ca.
