Polestar 2 recalled due to critical software issues

Polestar has taken the difficult but necessary step and recalled all of its Polestar 2 electric vehicles that have been delivered in Europe.

The Swedish automaker issued the recall on the new car this morning. According to the Swedish publication Dagens industri, owners are reporting the vehicle suddenly loses power and shuts down while driving.

So far about 2,200 Polestar 2 EVs have been delivered to several countries in Europe. They must now all visit a Polestar Service Center to receive a manual software update to fix the problem.

The following email has been sent to Norwegian customers to notify them of the issue (via Polestar-Forum).

“The first issue that may affect your car is critical, and may include loss of propulsion during driving, which results in the car stopping. In such cases, controls such as steering and brakes will stay functional. If this happens, you should active the SOS button and ask for roadside assistance.

Due to the nature of the issue, and for your safety, your car is in need of a manual software update to correct an internal logic error in the control unit of the battery, known as the Battery Energy Control Module. This needs to be performed at an authorized Polestar service center as soon as possible.

The second issue is not critical. We have learned that the headlights on some cars may have been adjusted incorrect during the preparations of the car. This will be corrected during the update of the Battery Control Module.”

The Polestar 2 was expected in North America last month, but reservation holders are still waiting for the first deliveries to begin. It is unknown at this time if this will further delay Canadian and US deliveries.

We reported this morning for the first time the official North American range rating for the Polestar 2, which was published on Natural Resources Canada’s fuel consumptions rating tool. The company was targeting a range of nearly 450km (280 miles), but it was only rated for 373km (233 miles).
