Tesla’s Model Y continues to dominate global electric vehicle sales in 2026, maintaining a substantial lead over its closest competitors despite growing competition from Chinese automakers.
According to data compiled by CleanTechnica, the Model Y recorded 748,088 sales worldwide between January and August 2026, more than double the 325,091 units sold by the second-place BYD Song/Seal U, whose total combines battery-electric and plug-in hybrid versions.
The latest figures build on the Model Y’s strong performance earlier this year. As we previously reported, Tesla’s electric SUV was already leading global sales through July, while also reaching another milestone in Japan.
That momentum has continued despite uneven results across individual markets. In California, the Model Y remains the state’s best-selling vehicle, even as Tesla’s overall sales declined during the third quarter.
Tesla Holds Two of the Top Four Positions
The Model Y finished the first eight months of 2026 with a commanding 422,997-unit advantage over the BYD Song/Seal U, selling 2.3 times as many vehicles.
Geely’s Xingyuan/EX2 followed closely in third with 321,454 sales, while the Tesla Model 3 secured fourth place with 298,903 units. The BYD Yuan Up/Atto 2 rounded out the top five at 225,334.

The rankings include both battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), meaning Tesla’s fully electric models are competing against vehicles with both powertrain options.
With four months remaining in 2026, the Model Y has established a sizeable lead. The question now is whether it can maintain that advantage through the end of the year.
