Tesla’s centralized Supercharger payment kiosks arrive in Canada

Tesla Supercharger in Kingston, Ontario with new payment terminal

Tesla’s centralized payment kiosks have started appearing at Supercharger stations in Canada, giving non-Tesla EV drivers another way to pay for charging without downloading the Tesla app.

The first reported sighting comes from Kingston, Ontario, where Tesla Supercharger tracker MarcoRP shared a photo of a standalone payment terminal at a Supercharger station waiting to be energized.

The discovery appears to be the first publicly documented installation of Tesla’s new centralized payment system at a Canadian Supercharger.

A new approach to Supercharger payments

Tesla began introducing these kiosks at select V4 Supercharger locations in the United States late last year. As Drive Tesla previously reported, the company is moving away from installing individual credit card readers on every charging post.

Instead, a single touchscreen kiosk can handle payments for multiple stalls.

For non-Tesla drivers, the process is straightforward. After plugging in their vehicle, drivers can use the kiosk to identify their charging session and pay directly by card. The screen also allows them to monitor charging progress.

Tesla owners will continue to enjoy automatic billing through their Tesla accounts, with no need to interact with the kiosk.

The centralized design also offers advantages for Tesla. Rather than maintaining individual payment terminals exposed to the elements at every stall, the company can service one shared unit, reducing hardware costs and potential maintenance issues.

Will kiosk payments cost more?

One potential drawback is pricing.

Early reports from the United States suggested kiosk payments could cost significantly more than charging through the Tesla app, with one driver reporting rates approximately double those available to Tesla owners.

However, Canadian kiosk pricing has not yet been confirmed.
