Rivian is recalling 98,828 vehicles in the U.S. because a notification can cover the rearview camera image when a driver shifts into reverse.
Transport Canada has not yet issued a similar recall.
According to Rivian’s filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the problem requires an unusual sequence of events. If a driver turns off stability control in certain drive modes, leaves the vehicle for a period of time and then returns, a notification may appear asking whether they want to switch back to a mode with stability control enabled.
Shifting into reverse before responding can leave that notification over the camera image.
The image appears once the vehicle starts moving, but that delay may prevent it from meeting federal rear visibility requirements. A driver can also bring up the image by selecting the camera page on the centre display.
The recall covers 62,259 R1S vehicles, 34,088 R1Ts and 2,481 R2s. Rivian discovered the issue during internal testing and, likely due to its difficulty to reproduce, says it has received no customer reports of the issue.
A free over-the-air (OTA) software fix is already available, and as of September 16, Rivian says more than 95% of affected vehicles, including 95% of the R1 population and 96% of the R2 population have already installed the update. Vehicles built after August 10 have the corrected software.
