Tesla retires Model Y white interior at Giga Shanghai, replaces it with Zen Grey

Tesla is making a significant change to one of the Model Y’s most recognizable features, retiring the white interior option that has been available since the vehicle first launched. In its place, the company is introducing the new Zen Grey interior that first appeared on the six-seat Model Y L.

The new interior is now available on all Model Y Premium variants built in Shanghai, which supply many key markets across the Asia-Pacific region, including Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and South Korea, all of which now have the new interior option available to buyers.

As you can see in the official annoumecnt below, Tesla also added the Dark 20’’ Helix 2.0 Wheels. These however have been available in the U.S. since January.

Unlike the previous white interior, which featured contrasting black trim elements, the Zen Grey design carries a more unified aesthetic throughout the cabin. Several components that were previously finished in black have now been colour-matched to better blend with the rest of the interior. This includes the armrests, door grab handles, centre console armrest, side console trim, and even the area surrounding the wireless charging pad.

The result is a softer, more consistent appearance that aligns with Tesla’s recent trend toward minimalist, less high-contrast interiors. While some buyers may prefer the bright, high-contrast look of the white interior, others will likely appreciate the more understated and arguably more practical Zen Grey finish, which could prove more forgiving in day-to-day use.

As with many Tesla changes, this update is limited to vehicles coming out of Giga Shanghai. However, Tesla has a well-established pattern of introducing updates in one factory before expanding them globally.

If that trend continues, and we fully expect it will, we should see the Zen Grey interior eventually make its way to Model Y production at other facilities, including in Fremont, Giga Texas, and Giga Berlin.
