Tesla sells out Model Y production in China for 2025 as delivery estimates extend into next year

Tesla’s Model Y order books in China have filled up for 2025. As of this week, all four Model Y trims built at Giga Shanghai are officially sold out for the rest of the year, meaning the factory’s remaining production slots for 2025 are now fully allocated.

Anyone placing a new order today will be waiting well into the new year: estimated delivery dates now show January to February 2026 for the two Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) and Long Range All-Wheel Drive (AWD) variants. The new six-seater Model Y L also shows a 4-8 week delivery window, which with today being December 1, means a January 2026 delivery at the earliest.

The extended delivery windows come as demand for year-end delivery surges, driven by China’s shifting new-energy vehicle (NEV) tax incentives. Buyers hoping to take advantage of this year’s more generous policies are now being steered toward inventory vehicles.

Tesla Pushes Model Y Inventory As Incentives Expire

With the high levels of interest, Tesla China recently updated its messaging to customers, explicitly advising anyone hoping to take delivery before December 31 to choose a vehicle from inventory that’s already built.

“Placing an order through the current car page can ensure that the car will be delivered before the end of 2025,”
Tesla China writes on its Model Y webpage (translated from Chinese).

This is because with customized Model Y orders now seeing 2026 delivery dates, new factory orders are effectively missing a significant tax exemption.

China’s outgoing NEV incentive provides up to RMB 30,000 (C$6,000/US$4,200) in tax reductions for vehicles delivered before the end of 2025. Starting in 2026, that benefit drops by half. The looming change has prompted dozens of domestic automakers to offer up to RMB 15,000 in compensation if deliveries slip into the new year.

Tesla hasn’t offered such a guarantee yet, but its inventory strategy is clearly designed to help buyers secure 2025-eligible units. The automaker is also offering a free paint upgrade worth RMB 8,000, as well as 5-year 0% financing, for orders placed before December 31.
