Tesla’s Top Winter Driving Tips to Stay Safe and Maximize Efficiency

Tesla sent out an email to customers this morning with tips on how to stay safe and get the most out of your Tesla this upcoming winter season. In case you didn’t get the email, here are Tesla’s top winter driving tips.

Optimize Energy Usage in Cold Weather

Tesla vehicles use additional energy during winter to combat increased tire drag and to keep the cabin and battery warm. This is normal, but there are steps you can take to manage energy consumption effectively:

  • Precondition Before Driving: Use the Tesla app to preheat the cabin, which also preheats the battery. Activating preconditioning while the vehicle is plugged in ensures the energy comes from an external power source, preserving your battery’s range.
  • Utilize Scheduled Departure: Set your departure time via the touchscreen or the Tesla app. Your Tesla will prepare itself by charging and preconditioning at the optimal times, ensuring peak efficiency from the moment you unplug.

Enhance Comfort and Convenience

Cold mornings don’t have to mean chilly starts. Tesla offers several features to make your winter drives more comfortable:

  • Defrost From Anywhere: Use the Defrost feature in the Tesla app to clear snow and ice before heading outside.
  • Adjust Mirrors and Wipers: If snow or ice is expected, place wipers in service mode and deactivate mirror auto-fold to prevent freezing. Both of these features are only accessible from the in-car display.

Drive Smarter with Tesla Technology

Winter roads can be unpredictable, but Tesla’s advanced technology helps you adapt to the conditions:

  • Monitor Energy Consumption: The Energy app on your touchscreen tracks real-time and projected energy use, offering tips to improve efficiency.
  • Plan Ahead with Navigation: When traveling to a Supercharger, navigate through the Tesla system to activate battery preheating, which improves charging speed and efficiency.

Prepare for Snow and Ice

Snowy and icy conditions require extra precautions to protect your vehicle and ensure a safe journey:

  • Clear Surfaces: Always remove snow from the hood, roof, and tailgate to prevent hazards for you and other drivers.
  • Handle Frozen Components: If door handles, mirrors, or windows are frozen, use the Tesla app to activate the Defrost feature or gently clear ice manually.

Invest in Winter Accessories

For those who regularly encounter snowy or icy roads, Tesla offers accessories to enhance winter driving performance:

  • Winter Tires and Snow Chains: Improve traction and safety with winter tires or snow chains, available through Tesla’s shop.
  • Protect Your Paint: Install mud flaps and paint protection film to shield your vehicle from salt, debris, and harsh winter conditions.
  • Cold-Weather Washer Fluid: Regularly top off with de-icing washer fluid to keep your windshield clear.

Keep an Eye on the Snowflake Icon

If a blue snowflake appears on your touchscreen or on your mobile app, it means the battery is too cold. A portion of your battery icon will also turn blue. This portion of your battery will be unusable, reducing your range, until the battery warms up. Driving, charging, and preconditioning will warm the battery and restore full functionality.
