Tesla warns FSD transfers end March 31 – will they ever return?

Tesla is warning customers that Full-Self Driving (FSD) transfers are coming to an end on March 31, 2026. While this isn’t the first time the company has put an expiry date on the program, the stakes are higher this time, following an announcement from CEO Elon Musk earlier this week.

Tesla first introduced FSD transfers in 2023, finally responding to years of owner requests. The program allows customers who already purchased Full Self-Driving — some paying as much as $19,500 in Canada or $15,000 in the U.S. — to move the software to a new Tesla. At the time, Elon Musk described it as a “one-time amnesty” that would end at the close of Q3 2023.

The FSD transfer program did end on that date, but as it turned out, it wasn’t a one-time amnesty, and it returned a few months later, with the same pattern repeating several times over, until the most recent iteration began on April 24, 2025.

However, Musk announced earlier this week that FSD was switching to a subscription-only service, and no one will be able to buy the driver-assist software package outright after February 14, 2026. Neither Tesla nor Musk have provided further details about the shift and its implications, leaving owners to speculate as to the future of FSD transfers.

We may now have at least a partial answer. Tesla is proactively reaching out to customers in Canada warning them that FSD transfers will soon be ending. In a text message sent to a Drive Tesla reader in Ontario, an advisor says customers must take delivery by March 31, 2026, the last day of Q1 2026, in order to transfer their FSD license.

Tesla’s website doesn’t list this expiry date, only saying the program is available “for a limited time.”

Does this mean the end of FSD transfers? For now, it is impossible to say with 100% certainty. Tesla has yet to provide any official guidance on whether the program will return, and until it does, we are left to speculate. As noted above, FSD transfers have come and gone in limited-time windows many times since 2023, often reappearing when Tesla wanted to stimulate demand.

However, Musk’s recent announcement that FSD is shifting to a subscription-only model changes the situation entirely. If FSD is no longer sold as a one-time purchase, the business case for allowing transfers largely disappears. But then there is customer loyalty to those who paid as much as C$19,500/US$15,000 for the software when it was in its infancy and who may never actually see FSD Unsupervised arrive on their HW3/AI3 cars.
