In yet another policy change for Tesla, the automaker has substantially reduced the warranty offered on its used vehicles.
Previously if you were to buy a used Model S or Model X that was less than four years old and had less than 80,000km, Tesla would provide a 4 year or 80,000km (whichever came first) warranty.
If your used Model S or Model X purchase was more than four years old or had over 80,000km, the warranty would be reduced to 2 years, or 160,000km, whichever came first.
Both used warranties would begin from the day you took delivery of your car.
Now Tesla has updated its support page for Vehicle Warranty information, and made some changes that will likely ruffle some feathers.
Instead of a 4 year warranty, buyers of any used Tesla vehicle (Model 3 included) will still be covered by the factory 4 year or 80,000km warranty. If that has expired, either by age or mileage, the new warranty will cover your used Tesla for just 1 year, or 20,000km.
To illustrate this change, let’s say you were buying a 3 years old Tesla with 60,000km on the odometer. Under the old warranty, you would be covered for 4 years from your delivery date, or up to 140,000km.
Under the new policy, you will instead be covered under the factory warranty for another year or 20,000km. After that expires, you would only be covered for 1 more year (instead of 4), or 20,000km (instead of an additional 80,000km).
While this change will save the automaker some money, it will certainly make some people take a second look at buying a used Tesla.
This isn’t the only recent policy change from the automaker. Drive Tesla was first to report the change to the Carrier Direct policy, eliminating home deliveries for several provinces in Canada. Tesla also cancelled it’s 7-day return policy last week.

Used & Extended Used Vehicle Limited Warranty
Used Vehicle Limited Warranty gives additional peace of mind to owners of used vehicles purchased directly from Tesla. Depending on age and mileage at the time of purchase, used vehicles can be covered as follows:
Used Vehicle Limited Warranty for Model S and for Model X
Model S and Model X that were under 4 years old and under 80,000 km at the time of Tesla delivery.
Used Model S and Model X are protected by a Used Vehicle Limited Warranty for 4 years or 80,000 km, whichever comes first, starting from your delivery date. The balance of original Battery and Drive Unit Limited warranty still applies for used vehicles. The Tesla Used Vehicle Limited Warranty does not extend or otherwise alter the original warranty.
Used Vehicle Extended Limited Warranty for Model S and Model X
Model S and Model X that were over 4 years old or over 80,000 km and under 6 years old and 160,000 km at the time of Tesla delivery.
Used Vehicle Extended Limited Warranty provides coverage for up to 2 years post-delivery or up to 160,000 km, whichever comes first. The balance of the original Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty still applies for used vehicles. The Tesla Used Vehicle Limited Warranty does not extend or otherwise alter the original warranty.

Warranty Coverage for Used Model 3
Used Model 3 vehicles are covered by the remaining balance of the original New Vehicle Limited Warranty and also the remaining balance of the original Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty.
