The Tesla Model Y is now the second most registered new vehicle in the United States. That isn’t the most registered new electric vehicle (EV), but vehicle period, as the Model Y is sitting in second place through the first nine months of the year, second only to the Ford F-150 pickup truck, a truck that has held on to the title of best selling vehicle in the US for over 40 years.
But Tesla, with the Model Y, is keeping close on its heels. The sales figures through the first nine months show both the Model Y and Tesla Model 3 in the top ten for registrations according to the latest data from Experian.
In terms of the top ten, they are: (via KBB.com)
- Ford F-150
- Tesla Model Y
- Toyota RAV4
- Chevrolet Silverado
- Honda CR-V
- Toyota Camry
- Nissan Rogue
- Toyota Tacoma
- Toyota Corolla
- Tesla Model 3
Through the third quarter, Toyota took the top spot for overall sales by a single brand. General Motors had the most vehicles registered overall with its four brands (Cadillac, GMC, Chevrolet and Buick), which is not a massive shock considering GM is still the largest automotive company in the United States.
Tesla dominated EV-specific brands and came in eighth overall for all auto brands. However, Tesla is losing market share in the EV space. Last year, Tesla held a 65.4 per cent share, while in 2023, that is down to 57.4 per cent. Even with the decrease, Tesla still registers one of every two EVs. It is certainly not time to panic for Tesla, as their market share was expected to decline, even with increased sales volume in 2023, as more EVs entered the market this year than ever before.
