Tesla Insurance first launched in California in 2019, and has since expanded to a total of eight states across the US. In comments made during the Q4 2021 earnings call, CFO Zachary Kirkhorn said the company is aiming to expand it further and have Tesla Insurance in enough markets so that 80% of owners in the US will be able to purchase the product by the end of the year.
Despite the planned expansion, and despite an almost constant barrage of questions on Twitter from Tesla fans in Canada, neither Musk nor Tesla have mentioned when the insurance product with premiums based on real-time driving behaviour will be available north of the border.
In an interview released last night by Johnna Crider, Musk finally talked about when Tesla Insurance will be available in Canada.
We’re expanding as quickly as we can. Eventually we intend to be in all states, and Canada, and hopefully the world,” Musk said.
The comments aren’t much to go by, but they are at least something. Musk didn’t provide a timeline for when these milestones will be hit, but according to Kirkhorn, the company is planning to target European countries in 2023, or even late 2022 if the expansion in the US goes smoothly.
The next states set to receive Tesla Insurance appear to be Maryland and Florida. The most recent state added was Nevada, which began offering Tesla Insurance earlier this month.
