Tesla Cybertruck is already the best-selling electric pickup in the US

The Tesla Cybertruck has only been available for two full quarters, but it appears to have already been able to claim the title of best-selling electric pickup truck for Q2 2024.

Tesla delivered the first 10 Cybertrucks on November 30, 2023, but didn’t begin deliveries in earnest until early 2024. Despite the late start, Tesla has been able to ramp production fairly quickly, recently announcing it was able to build 1,300 units in a single week at Giga Texas.

Even though the Cybertrucks currently rolling off the production line are the Foundation Series, which are US$20,000 more expensive than the “regular” Cybertruck, Tesla apparently has no problem selling them.

In its Q2 2024 production and delivery report released last week, Tesla announced it had delivered 21,551 “other models,” which includes the Model S, Model X, Semi.

Now that Ford and Rivian, the only other automakers currently producing an electric pickup truck, have announced their quarterly sales figures, it appears the Cybertruck is already the king of the electric pickup truck market in the US.

As mentioned above, Tesla didn’t break out the Cybertruck sales by themselves, but two recent recalls gives us a good indication of how many were likely delivered. Based on the number of vehicles listed as being included in the recalls, which affected every unit, Tesla produced 7,810 Cybertrucks between April 4th and June 6th.

That is almost two months of the three month quarter. Given the production rate mentioned above of 1,300 units per week, Tesla likely produced, and subsequently delivered over 12,000 Cybertrucks in the quarter.

That is well ahead of the Ford F-150 Lightning, which as we reported earlier today recorded 7,902 sales in Q2. Rivian doesn’t break down their sales by model either, but reported 13,790 R1T and R1S sales in Q2. According to previous information from Rivian, the R1S SUV accounts for around 70% of their reservations, so that would put R1T sales well below that of the Cybertruck.

If all of that isn’t enough to convince you that the Cybertruck was the best-selling electric pickup in the US last quarter, the official Cybertruck account on X reposted a post with the claim.
