Tesla and Uber unveil new in-car app integration

Tesla and Uber have expanded their partnership once more. Tesla owners can now use Uber’s app directly with their in-car display, allowing for a more streamlined way to manage rides.

Once the Uber app is connected to a Tesla, drivers can accept ride requests on their phones, and the navigation information is automatically transferred to the Tesla’s center display. Instead of switching between apps or inputting destinations manually, the Tesla screen now displays pickup and dropoff information automatically.

Uber’s integration also takes advantage of Tesla’s navigation system, which benefits from real-time traffic data, providing drivers with the most accurate and up-to-date routes.

One of the most important features of this integration for Tesla drivers, especially newer ones, is its ability to address a common concern – range anxiety. When connecting the Uber app to their Tesla, drivers can enable “battery-aware matching.” This feature automatically factors in the vehicle’s remaining battery life and ensures that drivers are only assigned ride requests that fall within their current battery range.

This builds on a feature launched last year where Uber drivers were given the ability to accept rides based on their EVs remaining battery charge.

This new integration is compatible with both iOS and Android devices.

The integration is the latest in a growing relationship between Tesla and Uber. Tesla vehicles have become increasingly popular with Uber drivers, especially following Hertz’s purchase of 100,000 Teslas for its rental fleet. Uber drivers have also been offered incentives, including a $2,000 discount on the purchase of a Tesla Model 3 and Model Y.
