Sobeys Taps Monta to Power Nationwide EV Charging Rollout Across Canada

Canadian grocery giant Sobeys has announced a new partnership with electric vehicle (EV) charging software company Monta to support the rollout of chargers across its national network of stores and offices.

Rather than building its own system from scratch, Sobeys will rely on Monta’s backend platform to manage and operate its growing EV charging infrastructure. The agreement marks Monta’s official debut in the Canadian market, with Sobeys serving as its first major customer in the country.

The initiative is part of Sobeys’ broader climate strategy, which targets net-zero emissions for scope one and two operations by 2040, and scope three emissions by 2050. Expanding access to EV charging—particularly at workplaces and retail locations—plays a key role in reducing transportation-related emissions tied to both employees and customers.

Founded in Copenhagen in 2020, Monta has quickly scaled its operations, now supporting more than 3 million charging sessions each month across a network of over 250,000 commercial chargers globally. One of the company’s key advantages is that it is not tied to a single hardware provider, with compatibility across more than 900 charger models from over 250 different manufacturers.

This flexibility allows companies like Sobeys to deploy chargers without being locked into a single hardware provider.

“Canada’s charging market is growing fast, and operators need software they can trust to grow with them,” said Casper Rasmussen, CEO and co-founder of Monta. “Having Sobeys as a flagship enterprise customer to launch in Canada is a milestone for us.”

Sobeys echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the importance of scalability and reliability as it expands its charging footprint nationwide.

“At Sobeys, we’re committed to making sustainable choices easier for our employees and communities,” said Natashia Dunham, National Director of Real Estate. “Partnering with Monta gives us a reliable, scalable platform to roll out EV charging across our national network.”

Monta’s platform also includes features tailored to the Canadian market, including support for carbon credit tracking under federal programs like the Clean Fuel Regulations (CFR), as well as British Columbia’s provincial initiatives. In addition, the company is working toward a roaming integration with ChargeHub, which will make Sobeys’ chargers easier to find and access for EV drivers across the country.
