Rivian confirms R2 launch event on March 7, 2024

Rivian is gearing up to finally unveil its highly-anticipated R2 platform. The automaker confirmed today it will host a reveal event on March 7th in Laguna Beach, California.

Last month we reported that Rivian was planning on holding a launch event for the R2 on March 7, based on documents filed with the City of Laguna Beach. While the automaker’s application to use part of Main Beach Parkpark was ultimately withdrawn, we suggested the event was likely to continue, but take place in the Rivian Theater, formerly the Laguna Beach Movie Theater, and it looks like that may be the plan.

On Monday Rivian announced on social media the event will take place on March 7, with a post on X saying “This is it. Get ready to meet R2 on March 7th.” No time or location for the event was included in the post.

Unfortunately the announcement also didn’t include any clues or hints about the R2, and what to expect. However, based on previous information shared by the company, we know it will be a more affordable compact SUV model aimed at capturing a wider audience than its current luxury offerings. With an expected starting price ranging from US$40,000 to $60,000, it is likely to challenge the Tesla Model Y, and other popular electric compact SUVs like the Kia EV6, and Hyundai Ioniq 5.

Rivian’s CEO RJ Scaringe has been vocal about how the R2 will bring EVs to a broader audience, likening the platform’s launch to its “Model 3 moment.” However, there is still much work to do before being able to achieve this milestone, most notably the construction of a new $5 billion manufacturing plant in Georgia.

This facility is expected to launch the R2 in 2026 and play a crucial role in ramping up production capabilities to meet the anticipated demand.
