Chinese battery manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) says they are have developed the mythical 1-million mile battery, and is now ‘ready to produce’.
CATL chairman Zeng Yuqun revealed the news in an interview with the South China Morning Post (SCMP), saying his company’s battery can actually last for 1.24 million miles.
“If someone places an order, we are ready to produce.“
Drive Tesla Canada told you earlier this year that Tesla and CATL were close to signing a new deal that would see them supply batteries for the recently complete Giga Shanghai.
The new batteries are expected to make it into made-in-China Model 3 vehicles this year. Tesla CEO Elon Musk was expected to reveal major breakthroughs in battery technology during their “Battery Day”, but so far the coronavirus pandemic has delayed that event.
In other battery related news, Tesla also recently applied to the Chinese government to manufacture lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. If approved, it would significantly reduce the cost of their batteries and ultimately their vehicles, bringing them in-line with their gas counterparts.
