Boring Company floats tunnel idea between South Padre Island and Boca Chica Beach

The Boring Company has come up with a potential solution to Boca Chica Beach closures during SpaceX Starship launches. The company is investigating digging a tunnel to restore access to part of the beach.

Boring Company representatives met with Cameron County officials about a month and a half ago to discuss the potential project, according to a report from The Brownsville Herald.

The proposed tunnel would allow access to the beach even when road closures are necessary for a launch.

If the plans comes to fruition, it would link Isla Blanca Park on South Padre Island and the northern tip of Boca Chica Beach. The total distance would be about one-third of a mile.

The project has not gone past the meeting stage, but county officials noted they are not interested in paying for the tunnel. However, if the company were to pay, the county may be more supportive.

The next step would be for the Boring Company to sit down with the county for specific discussions. There are other possibilities, including building a new road and running a ferry service.

However, the project would not be simple. The channel is a shipping lane, and the tunnel would need to go through environmental approvals.
