Hyundai piloting autonomous car riding service in South Korea

Hyundai has announced that the company would pilot an autonomous car riding service in Gangnam in Seoul, South Korea.

Hyundai called the ride-hailing service RoboRide and will use two Ioniq 5 vehicles.

The two Ioniq 5’s will include level 4 autonomous driving technology developed in-house at Hyundai.

Hyundai received a temporary permit for the pilot program from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

The company is working with Korean-based Jin Mobility, a top-tier AI company, on vehicle development.

Hyundai also partnered with the Seoul Metropolitan Government to establish a system to connect traffic signals with their autonomous driving technology.

As per Woongjun Jang, Senior Vice President and Head of Autonomous Driving Centre of Hyundai, had this to say on the pilot.

We expect this RoboRide pilot service will be an important inflexion point that will enable us to internalize autonomous driving technology.

For safety, Hyundai developed an in-house remote vehicle assist system that will monitor the vehicle, driving status and route. The system can intervene when needed, including changing lanes and stopping vehicles.

Hyundai will also have a safety driver on board to intervene under limited conditions.

Hyundai did not confirm when the vehicles would hit the road. Nor did they say when they planned to expand the pilot outside the two cars.
