2022 Porsche Taycan gets remote control parking, Android auto, and an array of new colours

Porsche announced this morning the new 2022 Porsche Taycan, and while it will look (mostly) the same, there are a number of changes and improvements coming that aren’t visible from the outside.

Improved Range

Perhaps most important to any electric vehicle (EV) owner is improved range. Even though there is no change to the Taycan’s official range rating, the automaker says it has been able to improve it through “extensive technological developments.”

In Normal and Range modes, the front electric motor is almost completely decoupled and de-energised in the partial load range in the all-wheel drive models. Furthermore, no drive is transmitted to either axle when the car is coasting or at a standstill. This electric freewheel function reduces drag losses. The motors are switched on again within milliseconds only when the driver requests more power or changes the driving mode.

Porsche has also been able to improve the charging speed by making changes to how the battery is heated prior to charging.

With the Turbo Charging Planner, the high-voltage battery can now be heated to a slightly higher temperature than before. This means that fast charging is possible earlier and at a higher charge level. In addition, the waste heat from the electrical components is used to an even greater extent for battery temperature regulation.

Remote Park Assist

A brand new optional feature coming to the 2022 Taycan is Remote Park Assist. Porsche says the Taycan owners will be able to remotely park their cars using the mobile app in both perpendicular and parallel parking spaces.

The system automatically detects parking spaces and measures them using the vehicle’s ultrasonic sensors and camera systems. If there is enough space, the driver can start the parking process via the Porsche Connect app and then get out of the vehicle. The driver continuously monitors the parking process by pressing and holding a button on the smartphone’s app interface.

More Paint Options

With the 2022 model year, Porsche is introducing new Paint to Sample and Paint to Sample Plus options. This gives owners the choice of 82 different colours, even allowing paint matching to the Porsche accessories.

The Taycan is now also available with Paint to Sample and Paint to Sample Plus in addition to 17 standard paint colours. The first option allows painting with 65 additional colours, at present.

Android Auto

Already equipped with Apple CarPlay, Porsche has now added Android Auto to the Taycan’s infotainment options.

Porsche says the 2022 Taycan and Taycan Cross Turismo will land in North American dealerships before the end of the year.
