When Porsche announced they had set a lap record at Germany’s Nürburgring, clocking a time of 7m42s, Tesla was quick to react by sending a couple of Model S vehicles equipped with the prototype tri-motor Plaid powertrain.
While Tesla didn’t get an official lap time, they were reportedly able to beat Porsche’s time by nearly 30 seconds with a hand-stopped time of 7m13s.
Now if the rumours are to be believed, Motor Trend will be testing the Porsche Taycan against the Plaid Model S next week.
The regular non-Plaid Model S has already gone up against the Taycan in what turned out to be a staged test by BBC’s Top Gear, with the Porsche taking the win.
Since it’s just a rumour at this point, there are no details about which variant of the Taycan will be tested, but it would be surprising if it was anything but the top-of-the-line Turbo S.
As the Plaid Model S is still a prototype at this point, we also don’t know much about it either. But Elon Musk did say at the recent Q4 earnings call that the Plaid powertrain will be released later this year.
Either way, if this rumour is true, this is the ultimate match-up right now in the world of electric vehicles. Until of course the Roadster comes out.
Who do you think will end up on top in a battle between the Plaid Model S and the Porsche Taycan?
