Tesla Model S owners to receive $625 over software update suit

Old Model S

According to US District Court documents, a proposed Tesla settlement will see some Tesla owners receive $625. The settlement covers Model S owners who had an over-the-air update pushed on their vehicles in May 2019. The update reduced the battery’s charging speed, maximum capacity and range.

As per the release, Tesla will pay $1.5 million into a fund to pay owners. In addition, the fund will cover the plaintiffs’ attorney fees and costs. According to the filings, 1,743 Tesla Model S owners experienced issues.

David Rasmussen took Tesla to court after tracking his Model S battery performance over several months. The suit was brought to court in August 2019. Tesla rolled out a fix in March 2020. Owners in the class action suit include US residents who owned or leased a Tesla Model S and experienced battery limitations due to the update in May 2019.

A hearing on the proposed settlement will happen on December 9, 2021. Tesla did not comment on the proposed settlement or the suit itself upon release of the documents.
