When you read a car review from a journalist in a newspaper, magazine, or online, chances are the car was provided by the automaker themselves. When it comes to reviewing a Tesla, Canadian journalists have to rely on a generous owner providing one, as the company doesn’t lend out vehicles in Canada.
For Porsche Canada, they saw that as an opportunity. They are so confident that their electric vehicle (EV) is better than its competitor, they also lend a Tesla Model S to journalists when reviewing the Taycan.
“I mean we definitely were and are confident. It’s one thing to be confident and it’s another to test it. A lot of journalists in Canada haven’t been able to find one,” Porsche Canada’s public relations manager Patrick Saint-Pierre told CarScoops.
They didn’t have to look far to find one. A Canadian Porsche dealer had a Model S P100D in stock, so they lent to the media department.
“I wanted to see if any dealer had any cars in stock. It was a bit of an unusual way of doing things, but I just thought, let’s do it. I didn’t have to do too much arm twisting. Everyone was like, ‘Alright let’s do it!’,” said Saint-Pierre.
Even with comparisons against the Tesla, the Taycan has held its own. It has been one of the top sellers for the German automaker, even outselling the iconic Porsche 911 in the third quarter of 2020.
