Earlier this year the California New Car Dealers Association (CNCDA) reported the Tesla Model 3 as the top selling car in California in the first three months of 2020.
What made that achievement remarkable was beating out the perennial winner for that title, the Honda Civic, which can be bought for less than $20,000.
According to figures from the Orange County Automobile Dealers Association (OCADA), the Tesla Model 3 again beat out the Honda Civic as the top selling car, this time in Orange County in the first half of 2020, capturing 4.6% of the market share.
When it comes to the top selling brands in Orange County, Tesla placed 4th overall behind Toyota, Honda, and Ford. An impressive showing considering it sells only 4 models (3 for half of the reporting period as the Model Y only started deliveries in March).
The auto industry in general in Orange County was hard-hit by the coronavirus pandemic. From January to June, there were 67,036 new cars registered, 23% less than the same period in 2019.
Taking the biggest hit was sedans, down 31%, followed by light trucks (pickups and SUVs) down 16%.
Now that Model Y production is in full swing after being halted due to the Fremont factory being shut down for two months, we can expect Tesla’s numbers in the second half of 2020 to improve even more in SUV-friendly California.
