If you live in BC, in particular the lower mainland or Vancouver Island, you already know Tesla Model 3‘s are popular. New figures obtained by Post Media show just how popular the electric sedan is in the province.
In just a 3 month period last year from April to June 2019, new Tesla owners claimed a whopping 3,257 provincial rebates. That’s more than 5 times as many as the next closest competitor, Chevrolet, with just 627.
In terms of dollar value, new Tesla owners accounted for $16.2 million out of the $30 million funded to the program. That rush eventually led to the fund running out of money, before being given more money but with a reduction in the rebate from $5,000 down to $3,000 in late June 2019.
Residents of West Vancouver were the biggest Tesla Model 3 fans, as 75% of the rebates claimed in the upscale municipality were for the Model 3. Next up were Richmond and Vancouver, where approximately 70% of the rebates claimed in those municipalities were also for the Model 3.
Tesla clearly made the right strategic decision when it came to pricing the Model 3 in Canada. In May 2019, Tesla introduced a software limited 150km Standard Range (SR) Model 3, priced at $44,999. That put it $1 under the threshold to qualify for the federal $5,000 rebate, which then also included the 386km Standard Range Plus (SR+).
Combined with the provincial $5,000 rebate, BC owners were able to get $10,000 off the purchase price of either the SR or SR+.
