Tesla is bringing back the Long Range RWD Model 3 for the Chinese market

Until last year, Tesla offered a configuration of the Model 3 that had the Long Range (LR) battery pack, but was also rear-wheel-drive (RWD). In typical Tesla fashion, it was abruptly removed from the Tesla Design Studio, making the only LR Model 3 option the all-wheel-drive (AWD) version.

Thanks to a keen eye from Jason Man who spotted a new filing with the Chinese Ministry of Industry, Tesla in China will be bringing back the LR RWD Model 3 to be built at the new Gigafactory Shanghai.

The new configuration hasn’t officially been added to the Tesla China Design Studio, so there are no details on pricing or availability for this version of the Model 3.

Tesla’s new Gigafactory Shanghai is primed to help Tesla have another record year. During the Q4 earnings call, Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed the Gigafactory was already producing 1,500 cars per week. He had also announced earlier that Model Y production was going to begin later this year the factory.
