Norway is a world leader when it comes to electric vehicle (EV) adoption. In 2019, 42% of all new car sales in the country were electric, with the top seller being the Tesla Model 3.
With that many EVs on the road, a plan is needed to recycle the batteries of all those EVs at the end of their useful lives.
To solve the problem, a new joint venture has been formed between Norsk Hydro and EV battery manufacturer Northvolt to set up a hub to recycle lithium-ion batteries.
The deal, which was announced Monday, would see the recycling facility built in Fredrikstad be complete and operation by 2021. Once up and running, it would be able to handle over 8,000 tons of batteries annually.
Along with the aggressive EV adoption targets in the country (100% of new light van and passenger car sales to be zero eimissions by 2025), Northvolt has set its own target of having 50% of the raw materials in their batteries coming from recycled batteries.
