Tesla has launched a new car scrappage program in the United Kingdom (UK), aimed at encouraging customers to trade in their older gas or diesel cars for a new Model 3 or Model Y.
For the month of June 2023 only, customers whose cars have a trade-in value of £2,000 or less will receive an equivalent discount when purchasing a new Model 3 or Model Y.
For example, if a customer brings a car with a trade-in value of £1,000, Tesla will offer an additional £1,000 off, resulting in a total discount of £2,000. If you have a £2,000 trade-in, you will receive the maximum discount of £4,000. To qualify for the program, the trade-in vehicle must have been registered in the owner’s name for at least three months and the customer must receive confirmation of their trade-in value between June 1 and June 30, 2023.
In a statement, Tesla emphasized their commitment to accelerating the world’s transition to sustainable energy and their desire to remove petrol and diesel vehicles from UK roads through their trade-in process.

The scrappage program has drawn a mixed reaction. Proponents say it is a good way to get older vehicles off the road and add more eco-friendly vehicles, while opponents criticize it for scrapping vehicles that may still have many years of driving left in them. When asked by Car Magazine who is scrapping the vehicles, a Tesla spokesperson only said it would be done through a “sustainable partner,” but did not provide further details.
