2023 Targa Newfoundland will see EVs face off against ICE vehicles for the first time

The 2023 Targa Newfoundland race, otherwise called “Race the Rock”, is adding a new wrinkle to the event this year. Race organizers are putting internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles against electric vehicles (EVs) in 1,900 km of racing through eastern and central Newfoundland.

This will be the 21st running of the Targa Newfoundland and the first to include EVs. The event features high-speed terrain, complex stages, over 500km (310 miles) of closed road sections, and 1,400km (870 miles) of transit routes.

The stages have been changed a little due to charging limitations in the province, but this will be one of the first multi-stage races that see ICE vs EV.

As chargers are limited in rural Newfoundland, competitors can employ portable EV chargers throughout the course.

The event will run from September 16-21, starting on the southern Avalon Peninsula. It features six individual legs ending in the Conception Bay area. The awards gala for the race will be on September 22 in St. John’s.
