Ford this week posted their September 2022 sales figures, and the Detroit-based automaker saw an overall decline of 9% compared to the same month last year. The picture would have been a lot worse however were it not for their electric vehicle (EV) sales, which tripled last month.
According to Ford their total vehicle sales were 142,644 units in September, with their truck segment taking a beating (68,299, -18.3%) while their SUV segment (70,877, +0.9%) faired a little better.
The lone bright spot was their EVs, which includes the Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning, and E-Transit van. Ford says they sold 4,691 of them in September, up 197.3% compared to September 2021.
The strong showing was led by the Mustang Mach-E, which saw its sales climb 47.3% over last year to 2,324 units. Next up was the Lightning at 1,918 units sold, bringing its annual sales up to 8,760 units since it was introduced in June.
Finally, the E-Transit van sold 449 units for a year-t-date total of 4,387 units. With so few options available Ford says their E-Transit now holds a 90% market share of the overall electric van market.
“Ford continued to see high demand vehicles turning at record rates in September, while developing electric truck and van leadership and extending our overall truck leadership,” said Andrew Frick, vice president, Sales, Distribution & Trucks, Ford Blue
Through September, Ford has now sold 41,236 EVs, giving them a 7.0% EV market share in the U.S., up 3.1% compared to last year.
While it is a good sign that they have been able to triple their EV sales and have delivered over 40,000 of them this year, it leads us to wonder how they will hit their target of selling 600,000 EVs in 2023.
Ford this week also announced a big price jump for the entry-level F-150 Lightning. It is the second price increase in less than two months, and makes the electric truck $12,000 more expensive than it was.
