Tesla job posting in Quebec further hints at new Canadian facility

The clues that Tesla is considering a big expansion into Canada keep piling up, with the latest being a new job posting in Quebec.

At first glance the job for a Recruiter doesn’t look out of the ordinary. The position will be based out of Montréal, with the job description saying they are looking for a “high volume, extraordinary recruiter that stands out by doing all of the above combined with strong business acumen, a passion for their craft, and a genuine commitment to providing an unforgettable candidate experience.”

However it is only when you consider the other markets where Tesla publishes job postings and descriptions similar to this that it begins to look like the automaker will soon be hiring a lot of people in Canada.

A review of the Tesla Careers website shows a number of Recruiter positions available in cities like Jacksonville, Florida and Taipei City, Taiwan. The job descriptions for these positions are similar, but the big difference is the use of the word “high volume” for the Montréal-based position.

Tesla uses this phrase for a position at Giga Texas, where they are obviously hiring thousands of workers as the factory ramps up production. (h/t: @oha_alex)

The idea of Tesla building a new factory in Canada began earlier this summer where during a company-wide meeting CEO Elon Musk said the company was considering site options for a new location in Canada and Mexico.

Then last month at the Annual Shareholder Meeting Musk asked those in attendance where the next Gigafactory location should be. Several shouted out Canada, with Musk then saying “I am half Canadian, maybe I should?”

The very next day it was discovered that Tesla had been lobbying the Ontario government for an “advanced manufacturing investment.”

That was followed soon after with a visit by the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry François-Philippe Champagne at Tesla’s facility in Markham, Ontario.

Tesla has also reportedly been scouting factory sites in Ontario and Quebec, and has also visited Nouveau Monde, a graphite mine and plant in Quebec, hinting Tesla may also be looking to secure some raw materials for EV batteries from Canada, just like Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen did this week.

Add it all up and it is looking more and more likely that Tesla will be expanding into Canada. The question is whether it will be a vehicle factory or EV battery plant – or maybe both?
