Rivian Adventure Network launches with fast chargers in California and Colorado

Rivian will open three DC fast chargers in California and Colorado this week, the first sites of their ambitious Rivian Adventure Network.

The first site to open today is in Salida, Colorado. The site features four chargers capable of charging a Rivian EV at over 200kW, which the company says is good enough to add up to 140 miles (225km) of range in 20 minutes. There is also a pull-through charging stall to accommodate Rivian vehicles towing a trailer.

The DC fast chargers are limited to Rivian vehicles only, but the site also has four Rivian Waypoint Level 2 chargers that any EV with a J1772 plug can use, adding about 25 miles (40km) of range every hour. Owners of non-Rivian EVs will have to download the Rivian mobile app in order to plug in and charge at the Waypoint chargers.

Two others sites in California will open tomorrow and on Wednesday in Inyokern and Bishop respectively. Rivian says these California chargers are ideal for owners heading to places like Sequoia National Forest, Death Valley National Park, and Yosemite National Park which already has some Waypoint chargers installed.

Rivian plans to install over 3,500 of their own DC fast chargers at more than 600 sites across North America by the end of 2023. A number of those stations will be in Canada, but based on a map of proposed locations will only be in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and the Maritimes.

Rivian says the network will be powered by 100% renewable energy, either directly with wind or solar, or through Renewable Energy Certificates.
