The two-year reign of the Tesla Model 3 as Consumer Reports’ (CR) top pick in the electric vehicle (EV) category is over.
For 2022 the nonprofit consumer organization has named the Ford Mustang Mach-E as their favourite EV.
The Mach-E earned the title after outscoring the Model 3 in several categories including road-test score, predicted reliability, owner satisfaction, and safety.
CR still praises the Model 3 as having “the latest technology, a long range, an impressive charging network, and a driving experience closer to a high-performance sports car than a sedan.”
However, they say the Mach-E is “more practical and easier to live with,” and specifically highlights the electric SUVs infotainment screen as being easier to operate.
“Both cars have large infotainment center screens, but the Mach-E’s is far easier to operate and doesn’t require multiple steps to activate routine features, such as using the defroster or adjusting the mirrors, as with the Tesla.”
Another factor that tipped the scales in favour of the Mach-E was reliability, with CR members reporting fewer issues than the Model 3 and Model Y.
CR also added two points to the scoring system this year for cars with active driver assistance systems with driver monitoring. While the Mach-E and Model 3/Y have cameras that monitor driver’s attention, CR said Ford BlueCruise system was more effective.
